Beetle-kill has been decimating Colorado's forests for decades. I remember evidence of the damage while cutting firewood in the mountains during the 1970s. I thought it was such a waste just to let those trees rot in the forest.
It's only taken the state 40 years to wise up. State Senator Mark Udall recently asked Colorado homebuilders to utilize beetle-killed trees to build homes. This is a brilliant move that will clear forests of combustible material and create jobs for the state. New Town Builders of Denver has pledged to use pine-beetle wood for their energy-efficient homes. They will have a lot of raw material at their disposal. Currently, there are 4 million acres of trees affected by the bark beetle. At a time when the state has no funding for clearing trees, homebuilders fill the void and reap the benefits. The clearing will improve scenic vistas and safety near roads, power lines and hiking trails. It will also be a boon to local economies offering jobs to clear timber, then mill and build home with the lumber. It is a unique solution to tackle several problems facing the state. Udall is responsible for developing other uses for beetle-killed trees like biomass and wood pellets. He has also worked to reduce the threat of wildfire by protecting natural resources and infrastructure. His efforts to lessen the effects of the bark beetle epidemic in the state span 10 years. Several months ago, Udall communicated with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to revive the state's timber industry. Legacy timber contracts were renegotiated and canceled, making it easier and cheaper for mills to remove dead trees from state forests. As a result, a sawmill in Montrose partnered with New Town Builders to put people back to work and supply wood products for home construction. Brilliant.
