Considering the condition of the real estate market these days it doesn't seem that right now is a particularly good time to become a real estate agent. However, with many jobs and careers gone for good, some people are considering a career in real estate sales as a way to get back on track. This is true in New Mexico as well as many other states. What does it take to start selling real estate in New Mexico? First, the state requires that all agents must hold valid New Mexico real estate licenses in order to list or sell homes or commercial property. In order to get a license you must be at least 18 years old and a legal resident of the U.S. Real estate licenses are issued only to individuals, not corporations. New Mexico residents are required to take 90 hours of courses prior to taking the state real estate license examination. The 90 hours of course work is divided into three 30-hour segments. The first two 30-hour courses are offered online or through correspondence. The final 30-hour segment involves broker basics and must be taken by all applicants in a classroom environment. If you hold a valid real estate license from another state you may skip the first two courses and are only required to take the third course. Once the required courses are completed, you have up to three years to take the license exam. The New Mexico Real Estate Commission issues two different real estate brokers licenses. An associate broker's license allows the individual to be associated with only one qualifying broker. A qualifying broker's license allows an individual to be the qualifying broker for more than one office. If you are interested in a real estate career in New Mexico it would be a good idea to go to the New Mexico Real Estate Commissions website for more detailed information.
